Clownfish

clownfish_image.jpg

This really just speaks for itself, what’s a clown with out a creme pie? so it shouldn’t be any different for clownfish. I often find it’s the simplest of my designs that I enjoy the most but I guess you’ve got to know what a clownfish looks like to get this one, if not it’s a fish with a pie for a head - that’s not as funny. Rock me Amadeus

Rock me Amadeus

Rock me Amadeus seems to have struck a chord with anyone who had to endure unwated music lessons as a kid. It’s a design I came up with a few years ago, and was at the top of the list of designs I wanted to see printed. Its been reworked a bit, more colours added plus the addition of the spotlight on the floor. BUY NOW

Dangerous Games

This design has always been a favourite of mine. My depiction of the seconds just before the that horrible incident which saw scissors removed from all olympic running events. They always said it was dangerous, but if his shoe laces had been done up properly it would have been fine. BUY NOW

Biblical Disaster

This was a design that I had thought about for a long time, but 2 things I added just before submitting it made the difference on this one. Firstly the iceberg, it wasnt my part of my original idea but seemed so obvious once I had drawn the ark and boats, and then the unicorn, very much a last minute addition but I think it worked! Ive alway been quite impatient creating these designs and used to submit designs straight after drawing them. Since this one Ive seen the value in sitting on a design for a few days once Ive got it ready to go, I find now that theres always something that you see you want to change the next day, which is a good thing.

What Would Macgyver Do?

What would MacGyver Do?

I got sent a link to the top 50 slogans on OMG (former Threadless subsidery), and asked to illustrate the one I liked. Being a huge fan back in the day, the Macgyver slogan was an instant winner for me. it was a public holiday here so worked on this that afternoon, not sure how I came to this? maybe it was reflective of the situation I was in at the time.

The Dark Side of the Garden

This one of those rare times where Ive had a few ideas for designs and Ive been able to combine random elements, I had seen a topiary tree and thought it may be a subject of a design and just worked back from there, I drew it about 3 times, in each the black caped motorcyclist was in a different position. Originally there was a ladder, but like a lot of my designs I tend to end up taking stuff away, as I think simplicity is always the best. I had drawn the version with the ladder about 6 months before I subbed this and decided it didnt work. I forgot about it but I found it one day going through some files, changed it around a bit and subbed it. which Im glad I did, this is my most reprinted design, and there seems to be a few people around who’ve made some cash ripping it off too, Ive seen it printed on a few different colours.

Gingerbread Nightmares

gingerbread nightmares

Gingerbread nightmares was something that I played around with for ages. I think gingerbread men are good subject matter to make fun of,. I tried incorporating rolling pins, cookie cutters and icing, and also smaller pieces of gingerbread to create a thought bubble but in the end I just kept it simple. I had a friend tell me recently that he thought the despair was because the gingerbread mans mate has disappeared? interesting if thats what people see, but my intended idea is that he’s just realised he has no legs, something that came to me when I was working with the original cookie cutter concept.

Calling Home

This still remains one of my favourites of all my designs. Not really too much to say about this one, one of those obvous ideas that works because people can instantly get whats going on, which I think is important. I like playing with positive/negative space so I used the interior and exterior light of the phone box to create its form out of the black shirt. this one was also in the day of 4 colour print restriction so to be able to use the shirt colour as part of the design definitely helped.

The War against Work

The War against Work

I had always wanted to do a paper dart design, I played around with this for a while trying to find a good mix of aircraft carrier and desktop layout - I think this was probably version 3 0r 4. I like the idea of people seeing the carrier first, then seeing the desktop elements/darts when you look a bit closer, I tried it using colour but the carrier concept was lost, so it was important to stick to the grey palette.

Swiss Army

Swiss Army

I thought about this idea on a rainy sunday morning while I was making a coffee. (there was a swiss army knife in my kitchen) by lunchtime this was finished except for the soldier. the original design just had an open manhole but after leaving it for a day I added the little guy and sent it in. One of those ones you dont have to think too hard about thats why I think it was pretty easy to resolve the design, it’s one my favourites too.

Prehistoric Freak

I love You... You Love Me. Time to buy this Awesome T.

This is another one of those designs that completely changed over the course of concepting it. Originally it was a purple t rex eating children, which I like but this came to me as a better solution for the parody. I like the thought of these cartoon/puppet creatures we’ve grown up with having skeletons etc. and because of the dinosaur theme linking it to a museum setting seemed like the obvious thing to do.

Potato Head is Dead

Death by the Atkins Diet

This just seemed like a simple, easily understood concept to me. I like to try to add the ingredients but let the person looking at the shirt fill in the blanks. This still remains one of my favourites. This was a Threadless 12 Month Club shirt so don’t think it will ever be up for sale again. Hope that’s not the case.

Paperboy

Paperboy

This is definitely one that went through a few versions over the space of about 18 months. Basically the idea was about having a paperboy made of paper and originally it was made out of newspaper covered in text. That just made for a confusing design and was hard to understand what was going on. I redrew it quite quickly and until recently I wasn’t sure if this could actually work out of an A4 sheet. You can download a pdf of it off my site and make it too.

Legendary Design Failure

How do You Say Ooops in Greek?

The trojan horse is fairly fertile ground for a design ideas. This one originally started as a trojan zebra, which over the course of an afternoon became a trojan seahorse. the soldiers were added right at the end but were required to add scale which I think was needed to more closely link it to the trojan horse

Homework Evidence

Vindicated by the Veternarian

Don’t really need to say much about this design, just one of those obvious themes that I hadnt thought about before but beacuse its so obvious thats why it works I guess. It was just important that the colour palette stayed as close to xray film as possible. A suggestion was made in the comments about using luminous ink with this which I think could add to the theme.
